The demolition was intentional. I have photos of a large portion of the souks that still existed before the reconstruction but was destroyed intentionally. There was a desire to change what Down Town was, and this desire was made a reality. I can help you out a lot with the details of what lived through the war and how the area was actually 'reconstructed,' do contact me if you're interested.
